Volatile Imp

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Volatile Imp can be a handy little creature that helps you through a quest or in battle. They are fairly small and go unnoticed by most mortals and creatures, but if you can control enough of them, they can be very distracting.

They have very low intelligence, and will eat anything they can get their tiny hands on. Purple, leathery skin, small wings, and a mouth of razor sharp teeth make them annoying in small groups, but fairly dangerous in large packs.

Called to Eucos from a demonic realm, they are unable to control their own spells or energy, but that doesn’t stop them from trying. Inexperience and low intelligence usually mean they blow themselves up. It’s possible to convince one to fight, but it has to be done before they have time to think on their own. When that happens, someone is bound to get a little hurt by collateral damage from the tiny explosion.

Dionysian Bull

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Part of a series of written narrative sketches based on cards from the game Gods Unchained. These are just for fun and are not officially tied to Immutable or Gods Unchained in any way. www.godsunchained.com

The Dionysian Bull can be found roaming large vineyards or any place that regularly stores wine. Their sense of smell is attuned to any species of grape or grape product as the grapes and grape leaves are their primary source of food. Bordering on being categorized as a pest, they are extremely hard to get rid of once they have infested an area.

Cream colored fur covers an extremely dense hide that is almost impenetrable with standard weapons. Injuries sustained during fights with other creatures are usually so minor, they heal themselves quickly. Their large horns and confused nature makes them dangerous even though they lack intelligence and coordination.

Being extremely tenacious, a Dionysian Bull will stop at nothing to gore a wine barrel until it cracks open. They can also use their unusually long tongue to lap up liquids from the deepest barrels if necessary. Drunk on wine, totally confused, and virtually unstoppable, these bulls have caused an immeasurable amount of damage across Eucos.

A hide too thick to make anything useful and meat too tough to eat means these beasts aren’t hunted regularly and usually require large spells and wards to clear them from an area. The local government hires exterminators to take care of the worst infestations billing any landowners who don’t deal with the problem themselves.

Deuteria, Manashard Mage

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Part of a series of written narrative sketches based on cards from the game Gods Unchained. These are just for fun and are not officially tied to Immutable or Gods Unchained in any way. www.godsunchained.com

Manashards are a solid, crystalline form of mana that only manifest in very rare circumstances. One place they consistently form is in a manashard garden. No one knows for sure how to find a manashard garden, or what specifically makes manashards grow there, but a few miners have stumbled across them while digging deep into Euros. Deuteria, a Manashard Mage is always there to greet them.

Deuteria, is the first line of defense for manashard gardens, and welcomes everyone who stumbles into one with no ill intentions. Offering guidance and knowledge, Deuteria will allow travelers to keep a manashard as a gift, but only one they can use safely. She has a fondness for mortals and will help them on their quests, and sometimes in battle if she deems them worthy. A very powerful mage, she can call on other manashard guardians to help her if necessary.

Mortals who have encountered Deuteria describe her as a gorgeous being with impossibly soft, pale skin adorned with manashards. She wears a long dress the color of copper and trimmed with gold. This description leads some to believe she was mortal at one time, before dedicating herself to guarding manashards and mastering mana control. No one knows for certain, and with encounters being so rare, the truth may never be known. Deuteria can manipulate mana at will, allowing her to perform spells mortals and other mana manipulators thought impossible.

Deuteria guards some of the most powerful manashards in existence and lends knowledge to those who wish to use them. Merlin has been known to consult with Deuteria as he has a staff topped with a manashard that was a gift from Octavia, the Manashard Queen. Some Anubian Tomb Priests shape and embed them in their shields and mana thieves have created a large black market, stealing and selling them to the highest bidder. Deuteria never tires of tending to the manashard gardens and constantly studies mana manipulation in order to help other beings in their quests for knowledge.

The Barricade is a fairly simple low-cost structure used to deter enemies. Quickly hammered together on the battlefield directly in the path of any advancing creatures, it will slow them down a significant amount.

Because it is a structure, it will stay planted in one position and do damage only to creatures who attempt to cross it. Strong creatures can easily demolish them, but smaller creatures can struggle, possibly shifting the tide of battle.

Wild Hog

The Wild Hog is a fairly common creature in the forest. Because of their high numbers and aggressive nature, they’re hunted regularly. They can be easily captured and used on the battlefield as an attack animal, but their behavior is unpredictable.

Because of their high numbers, the market for Wild Hog is saturated with products which keep prices low. Their tusks can be carved and used in trinkets and jewelry. Their hides are extremely thick with dense fur which allows it to be used in medium strength armor or heavy clothing for cold weather. Their meat is included in most recipes because of its commonality. Stews, skewers, steaks, wild hog patties, Hogburgers, are all sold from street vendors throughout towns across Eucos.

If you’re alone and encounter a Wild Hog, climb a tree, or try to distract it by throwing a stone or other object away from you. They are terrible climbers but can run unusually fast due to their large forelegs that resemble mortal arms with hooves. If you’re with someone else, just make sure you can run faster than they can.

Best Friends

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Argus had a goal. That goal was to be the best animal trainer in town, despite some of his shortcomings. The main one being, he wasn’t very good with animals! Undeterred, Argus set out to befriend and train as many animals as he could, starting with very small animals. He would find them in the forest, feed them bits of food, then try to teach them tricks or commands to obey.

As time went on, Argus became frustrated because he was not able to domesticate any of the small animals. So, he decided to jump headfirst into training some medium-sized animals instead. In his mind, bigger animals meant bigger brains, and bigger brains meant easier to train animals.

Argus saw an eagle soaring overhead and figured there was no better time than the present to get started. Even though he was already trying to control several small creatures he waved some scrap meat and called out with his best eagle call to get the birds attention. A badger that had walked into the clearing saw the meat in Argus’ hand and immediately started to charge towards him.

Hearing an eagle call and seeing a charging badger caused all of the other small animals to scatter. Argus, who had been oblivious to his surroundings while focusing on the eagle, finally noticed what was happening. He looked at his scattered animals, looked at the badger running directly for him, and looked at the meat in his hand. Slowly realizing his mistake, Argus began to run…..

Black Jaguar

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Part of a series of written narrative sketches based on cards from the game Gods Unchained. These are just for fun and are not officially tied to Immutable or Gods Unchained in any way. www.godsunchained.com

Black Jaguars are one of the most elusive animals in the forest. An encounter usually results in certain death which means very few people can claim to have seen one. Their pulsing yellow eyes hypnotize prey immediately causing paralysis and guarantee a kill. They are primal animals, and as such can be distracted or confused by multiple creatures working in concert with each other.

While their coats are black, it reflects moonlight with a deep shade of violet. One has never been captured alive, only brief encounters documented by hunters who fled the area immediately after seeing a purple sheen, or yellow glow flashing through the trees. Looking too hard could lead to eye contact, and then a horrific death.

A Black Jaguar pelt is priceless on the open market. No one will hunt them, and a carcass is only found once every few years in a mangled state, likely taken down by a dragon or large pack of wild hogs that can keep it confused and unfocused. The pelts will mend themselves if torn and held together for a few moments, leading some to believe the Black Jaguar can heal itself almost immediately while in battle.

Vanguard Axewoman

Dirt and grass fly into the air as the Vanguard Axewoman blitzes towards her enemy. She wields her twin axes as extensions of her own arms. Raised to train with them from childhood, they never leave her side.

She projects a silhouette that looks like a dragon flying high, ready to strike. Her shadow blocking out any rays of hope her enemies may hold. Each axe has its own set of protective runes engraved on the blades. Blades that are so sharp they can cleave bone in one strike without stopping.

As she charges forward the sun sparkles off her blue and gold armor. The intricate designs embedded in the cold metallic surface tell the story of her life. Battles fought, friends lost, the family left behind. She peers through her golden helmet at the enemy, seeing the fear in their eyes. She has trained to attack quickly and without hesitation, which is why she is almost always the first to strike.

Ashen Drake

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Part of a series of written narrative sketches based on cards from the game Gods Unchained. These are just for fun and are not officially tied to Immutable or Gods Unchained in any way. www.godsunchained.com

The steep incline leading to the cave mouth was almost vertical. Christos was tempted to sheath his axe and strap his shield to his back for better balance, but sound judgment got the better of him. The Ashen Drake had attacked his village for decades. Slaughtering livestock, burning buildings, and wreaking havoc among his friends and family. His sister Sophia was one of the latest victims, and he vowed revenge. With pain in his heart and rage in his veins, he inched closer to the cave that housed the beast.

The creature must have heard his approach. The ground shook and the Ashen Drake blasted from the cave mouth like a starshard bolt. It was impossibly quick given its size and Christos knew he was a dead man. The beast flew straight up and dropped straight to the ground in front of him. Rocks exploded in every direction as the solid ground was crushed under the enormous weight of the dragon.

The Ashen Drake coiled its head back like a snake, opened its maw, and blasted Christos with fire. Holding his shield high in defiance to block the raging inferno, Christos said one last prayer to his God, channeled all of his pain and anger into his axe, and drew his arm back for what he hoped would be a killing blow…..
