It was an impossible job with an equally impossible payout. It was too good for Thadius to pass up, even though everyone told him he should. How would it be possible to get behind the front line AND the rear line of the enemy battlefield without being spotted? “It can’t be done!” is what he heard from everyone he asked about it.
Thadius wasn’t deterred. Taking inspiration from the eagles he saw floating across the updrafts near the mountains outside of his home, he knew it was possible to fly. Fly high enough for the enemy to think he was just a bird, and land in just the right spot to deal a crippling blow to any enemy.
Making one giant wing from the thin hides of blessed jackalopes, Thadius was confident he could accomplish his mission. Rolling up the hides and heavy branches into a pack, he carried them to the crest of the tallest mountain. He built the wing and triple-checked every joint, making sure it would not come apart in the middle of the flight. With one last prayer to the Goddess Ludia, Thadius lifted the wing and ran as fast as he could off the edge of the mountainside and started his first flight, which might also be his last.
